The spooky season gets underway at the Austin Film Society's AFS Cinema on Oct. 5 with Joe Bob Briggs's Oct. 5 presentation of two chillers, 1988's The Brain and 1987's Don't Panic; the "Flesh & Blood: Two Hammer Horrors of the '70s" miniseries, featuring Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb; the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found selection Vampyros Lesbos; the big screen classics The Innocents and Carrie; and "The History of Television: Halloween" 6-hour marathon on Oct. 31, which will include Halloween-themed TV movies and episodes. The AFS Cinema will also host the series "The Neo-Noir Canon: Part 1," featuring Experiment in Terror, Point Blank, The Long Goodbye, Chan is Missing, and Devil in a Blue Dress. New releases include Triangle of Sadness. Documentaries include My Old School, Loving Highsmith, and Chicago: The Last Band On Stage with director Peter Pardini and drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr. in attendance and founding member Lee Loughnane joining via Skype. Retrospective and newly restored screenings include director Patricio Guzman's The Battle of Chile documentary trilogy, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Black Orpheus in 35mm, and The Man Who Fell to Earth, which returns to the AFS Cinema to screen in conjunction with the new David Bowie portrait Moonage Daydream. Trouble Every Day, Tokyo Decadence, and What About Me round out the Lates.
