Interview:
Alana Haim,
"Licorice Pizza"
Perhaps it should not have come as a surprise to singer Alana Haim that director Paul Thomas Anderson wrote for her the role of Alana in his 1970s coming-of-age drama Licorice Pizza. Since 2017, Anderson has directed 10 music videos for pop-rock trio Haim, including the new single “Lost Track.” So it seemed inevitable that Anderson that would one day collaborate with Alana Haim and her sisters Este and Danielle on a film. In the Oscar-nominated Licorice Pizza, Alana Haim’s lost and listless twentysomething Alana Kane finds herself striking up an unexpected friendship with Cooper Hoffman’s 15-year-old Gary Valentine. Alana becomes a muse of sorts to the ambitious and enterprising Gary, whose crush on Alana leaves her both reenergized and confused. Licorice Pizza unfolds as a family affair, with Alana Haim’s sisters Este and Danielle and their parents Moti and Donna playing supporting roles. The cast also includes Bradley Cooper as real-life infamous producer Jon Peters and Sean Penn as vaguely fictional actor Jack Holden. Nominated for three Academy Awards, Licorice Pizza is both in Austin theaters and available for digital and on-demand viewing. Alana Haim, who makes her acting debut in Licorice Pizza, can also currently be heard on the latest Haim album “Women in Music Pt. III.” She will reunite in April with her sisters and Licorice Pizza costars Este and Danielle for the One More Haim Tour, which includes a stop at Austin’s Moody Amphitheater on May 4. Aired: March 24, 2022.
