Suspended for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Austin Film Society’s annual gala the Texas Film Awards returns March 3 for the first time since 2020 with a star-studded line-up of honorees. Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania actor Jonathan Majors will receive the Rising Star Award. Fort Worth-based Hollywood executive, producer and screenwriter Michael De Luca, Jacksonville-born actress Margo Martindale, and SXSW Film & TV Festival’s Director Emeritus Film & TV Janet Pierson and her husband, producer, author and UT lecturer John Pierson will be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. The Righteous Gemstones star, Texas City native, and Texas State University grad Edi Patterson will emcee the gala, which will be held at 6 p.m. March at Willie Nelson’s Luck ranch in Spicewood. The Austin Film Society will also host a members-only screening of Creed III, starring Jonathan Majors, at 7 p.m. March 2 at the AFS Cinema. In addition, the Austin Film Society will host in March a series curated by another Texas Film Hall of Fame inductee, Ethan Hawke. Inspired by his HBO Max documentary series The Last Movie Stars, Hawke’s series “Paul Newman's West” will run March 24-28 at the AFS Cinema and features screening of The Left Handed Gun, Hombre, Hud, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, and Buffalo Bill and the Indians.
