Interview:
Danishka Esterhazy,
director,
"Slumber Party Massacre"
Slumber Party Massacre’s driller killer Russ Thorn is back and he’s ready to crash your sleepover. Not that director Danishka Esterhazy’s Slumber Party Massacre is a strict remake of the 1982 slasher classic that saw Thorn terrorize a group of unsuspecting teenage girls. This reimagining, set in and around an isolated lake house, offers a meta take on Amy Holden Jones’ chiller that also subverts the male gaze imposed upon the original and its two sequels by producer Roger Corman. Now played by Rob Van Vuuren, psychopath Russ Thorn arms himself with his trusted power drill with the intent to massacre the four friends (Hannah Gonera, Frances Sholto-Douglas, Alex McGregor, and Mila Rayne) who rented the lake house for the night. Slumber Party Massacre, which premiered locally during this year’s Fantastic Fest, debuted Oct. 16 on SYFY and is now available for digital and on-demand viewing. Danishka Esterhazy recently directed SYFY’s The Banana Splits Movie and the Fantastic Fest entry Level 16. She is currently directing episodes of the SYFY new original series Astrid and Lilly Save the World. Aired: Oct. 28, 2021.
