Interview:
Sabrina Van Tassel,
director,
"The State of Texas vs. Melissa"
Directed by Sabrina Van Tassel, the documentary The State of Texas vs. Melissa presents a vivid portrait of Melissa Lucio, the first Latina to be sentenced to death in Texas. The Cameron County resident remains on death row after her conviction of the 2007 murder of her 2-year-old daughter Mariah. The State of Texas vs. Melissa makes a strong argument that Lucio is the victim of a miscarriage of justice, that she received an inadequate legal defense and was an easy target for a district attorney under public scrutiny and eager to appear tough on crime during reelection campaign. The State of Texas vs. Melissa is available to stream via the Austin Film Society's Virtual Cinema. The documentary also is available for VOD and digital viewing. Sabrina Van Tassel, a French-American journalist, previously directed the documentaries Women On Death Row and The Silenced Walls.
