Interview:
Will Forte, "Nebraska"
Director Alexander Payne raised some eyebrows when he cast former Saturday Night Live funnyman Will Forte opposite Bruce Dern in his father-son dramedy, Nebraska. Then again, Payne is a director who likes to take chances with actors known primarily for their comic prowess, most notably with Thomas Haden Church in Sideways. Nebraska stars Forte as David Grant, who takes a break from his everyday problems to drive his cranky father Woody from Montana to Nebraska to collect what Woody believes is $1 million in sweepstakes winnings. David knows Woody hasn’t won a penny but the road trip offers him an opportunity to spend invaluable time with his elderly father, reunite with family members he has not seen in years, and learn about how his parents met and maintained a marriage he views with a jaundiced eye. Dern stars as Woody, June Squibb as his wife Kate, Bob Odenkirk as David’s brother Ross, and Stacy Keach as Ed Pegram, Woody’s former business partner and current nemesis. Forte spent eight seasons on Saturday Night Live before leaving in 2010 just after the release of MacGruber, the action comedy that was based on his MacGyver-inspired SNL series of sketches. He’s since appeared in A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, Rock of Ages, and The Watch. He also made memorable guest appearances in 30 Rock and lent his voice to this year’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball 2 as the villain Chester V. He next will be seen in two comedies opposite Jennifer Aniston: Life of Crime, which is based on the Elmore Leonard novel The Switch, and the Peter Bodganovich-directed Squirrels to the Nuts. Will Forte spoke about Nebraska when he attended this year's Austin Film Festival for the dramedy's local premiere.
