"Ben is Back"
Written and directed by Peter Hedges, and starring his son Lucas Hedges, the drama Ben is Back focuses on a young drug addict who struggles to remain in recovery during an unannounced visit to his family on Christmas Eve. Ben (Lucas Hedges) is forced to confront his dark past when the home of his mother and his stepfather is broken into and the family dog is taken by one of Ben’s criminal acquaintances. Julia Roberts plays Ben’s mother Holly, who joins Ben in a bid to retrieve the dog. The cast also includes Courtney B. Vance as Holly’s husband Neal and Kathryn Newton as Ben’s sister Ivy. Ben is Back premiered locally during this year’s Austin Film Festival and opened Dec. 21 in Austin. Peter Hedges previously directed Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, and The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Hedges also adapted his novel What's Eating Gilbert Grape into the 1993 coming-of-age drama, which was shot in and around Austin, and he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for About a Boy.
