director Joseph Kahn,
"Bodied"
What starts as research for a thesis paper quickly turns into a quest for fame, glory and respect in director Joseph Kahn’s dramedy Bodied when a nerdy white graduate student discovers that he has a talent and fervor for battle rap. Played by Calum Worthy, Adam takes the battle rap world by storm with his inventive bars that leave his opponents grasping for words. But Adam soon gets caught in battle rap’s reliance on the use of racist, sexist and homophobic insults, which causes him trouble both at home and at school. Bodied costars Jackie Long as Adam’s mentor Behn Grymm, a veteran battle rapper who remains closely guarded about his personal life. The cast also includes real-life battle rappers Dizaster, Dumbfoundead, and Hollow da Don. Bodied is informed by the experiences of screenwriter Alex Larsen, who battled rapped as Kid Twist. Bodied premiered locally during last year’s Fantastic Fest and opened Nov. 1 at the Alamo South Lamar. Raised in Houston, Joseph Kahn (pictured) made a name for himself as a music video director in the 1990s before turning to feature films with 2004’s Torque and 2011’s Detention. Calum Worthy costarred in the Disney Channel sitcom Austin & Ally and Jackie Long in the films ATL and Idlewild.
