Interview:
Ric Roman Waugh,
writer/director,
"Shot Caller"
A spiritual sequel to 2008’s Felon, Austin-based writer/director Ric Roman Waugh’s Shot Caller stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jacob Harlon, an ex-con out on parole who cannot escape his past life as a prison gang member. Reluctantly acting on orders from his prison gang leader, Harlon becomes embroiled in a gun-running operation that could threaten his newfound freedom. Through flashbacks, we learn about the tragic events that led to Harlon’s incarceration and his initiation into a white supremacist prison gang. Shot Caller is a companion piece to Felon, which featured Stephen Dorff as a family man who is convicted of killing a home intruder and sent to serve his sentence in a California state prison. Shot Caller’s cast includes Jon Bernthal and Benjamin Bratt, who both appeared in writer/director Ric Roman Waugh’s 2013 thriller Snitch. In addition to Snitch and Shot Caller, former stuntman Ric Roman Waugh directed the 2001 thriller In the Shadows and the 2015 documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, which shined a light on military PTSD. The Austin Film Festival will screen Shot Caller at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11 at the Galaxy Highland with writer/director Ric Roman Waugh and Participant Media EVP of Narrative Film Jonathan King in attendance. Shot Caller also will be available to watch on DIRECTV beginning July 20 and will open in theaters and be available for VOD viewing on Aug. 18.
