Interview:
Ric Roman Waugh,
co-writer/director,
"Angel Has Fallen"
Austin-based director Ric Roman Waugh assumes the responsibility of overseeing Gerard Butler’s Mike Banning/Fallen action franchise with Angel Has Fallen, the third in the trilogy that began with Olympus Has Fallen and continued with London Has Fallen. With Angel Has Fallen, Waugh departs from the franchise’s Die Hard-esque scenarios to present a Fugitive-style thriller that pits Secret Service agent Mike Banning against an unseen domestic enemy. Banning goes on the run when he is framed for the attempted assassination of President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) and the murder of dozens of the President’s protection detail. Angel Has Fallen also stars Nick Nolte as Banning’s survivalist father Clay Banning; Jada Pinkett Smith as Helen Thompson, the FBI agent on the hunt for Banning; Tim Blake Nelson as Vice President Martin Kirby; Danny Huston as Wade Jennings, Banning's old war buddy; and Piper Perabo, replacing Radha Mitchell as Banning’s imperiled wife Leah Banning. Angel Has Fallen opened Aug. 23 with a career-high $21.3 million for its Austin-based director/co-writer, Ric Roman Waugh. The former stuntman and stunt coordinator previously directed In the Shadows, Felon, Snitch, and Shot Caller. He also directed the documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, which examines the impact of military PTSD on two Iraq war veterans. That Which I Love Destroys Me serves as an inspiration for Angel Has Fallen in that Banning suffers from physical and psychological damage caused by the events prior to and during the terrorist attacks he thwarted in Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen.
