Interview:
Lulu Wang,
creator/director,
"Expats"
After enjoying critical and commercial success with her 2019 family drama The Farewell, writer/director Lulu Wang returns with her latest project, the Prime Video Expats. Based on the 2016 novel “The Expatriates” by Janice Y. K. Lee, the 6-episode miniseries focuses on the tragedy that directly or indirectly impacts a group of Americans living and/or working in Hong Kong during the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests. The miniseries tracks the troubled marriages of two expat couples (Nicole Kidman and Brian Tee; Jack Huston and Sarayu Blue) and compares and contrasts their lives against those of their seemingly devoted foreign domestic helpers. Ji-young Yoo costars as Mercy, a young woman who inadvertently triggers a heart-wrenching chain of events. The first two episodes of Expats premiered Jan. 25, with each of the remaining four episodes premiering weekly on Thursdays. Lulu Wang, who previously directed The Farewell and Posthumous, created and directed Expats.
