Interview:
Justin Sherburn, composer,
"Man With a Movie Camera" live score
Voted the 8th best film ever made by in 2012 by Sight and Sound readers, director Dziga Vertov’s 1929 experimental silent documentary Man With a Movie Camera captures a day in the life of Soviet Union citizens at work and at play. Over the past 30 years, Man With a Movie Camera has become a favorite for contemporary composers to compose live soundtracks to accompany screenings of the film. Joining the ranks of Michael Nyman, Alex Otaola and Geir Jenssen is Justin Sherburn, the keyboardist with the Austin-based indie rock band Okkervil River. Sherburn also has composed the scores for two documentaries that screened at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, Above All Else and Yakona. Justin Sherburn and his sextet Montopolis will perform their live score to Man With a Movie Camera at 8 p.m. July 25 at the North Door. Above All Else will screen 9 p.m. Aug. 17 at the French Legation as part of the Cinema East 2014 series.
