Written and directed by the Austin-based Daniel Earney, The Backup Plan places an unemployed single father between a rock and a hard place: seek out menial work in the hopes of staying financially afloat or turn to crime so he can pay his rent. Todd Essary stars as Russell, the mechanic who takes to stealing catalytic converters in order to make ends meet. The Backup Plan will screen during the Houston Film Commission’s Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase, which will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 26 at the AFS Cinema. Daniel Earney previously directed the documentary short Southbound & Truckin' and the narrative shorts Barrow and Laundry Day.
