![]() https://www.ryanbooth.tv/The age-old struggle between art and commerce comes under scrutiny in the short drama The Heights, co-written and directed by the Brooklyn-based Ryan Booth and produced by the Austin-based Henry Proegler (pictured). Ben and Jessie, the eponymous music duo of The Heights, already are under enough pressure to perform a buzzworthy make-it-or-break-it industry showcase at L.A.’s famed rock club, the Troubadour. But then record label executives start to interfere with the duo’s music in a bid to make them more commercially appealing, forcing Ben and Jessie to decide whether they want to compromise their artistic integrity. Austin-based musician David Ramirez plays Ben, former New Braunfels resident Betsy Phillips plays Jessie. The Heights will screen during the Houston Film Commission’s Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase, which will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 26 at the AFS Cinema. The founders of the production company Hank and Booth, The Heights co-writer and director Ryan Booth and producer Henry Proegler previously made the short football-theme documentary Five Star, which screened as part of last year’s Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase. A musician, Booth also directed the narrative short David Ramirez: Rock and a Hard Place, which featured his Heights stars. Booth and Proegler are preparing to shoot a feature film based on The Heights, titled Stages, in 2019 with David Ramirez returning to his role of Ben.
