"El Gato Feo (The Ugly Cat)"
Written and directed by Austin-based filmmaker Daniel Fabelo, the historical short drama El Gato Feo (The Ugly Cat) explores the conflict between two half-sisters on different sides of the Mexico Revolution in 1914. Luisa (Natalia Villegas) flees into the desert after revolutionaries attack her village and kill her new husband and her rich father on her wedding day. By chance, Luisa crosses paths with her younger maternal half-sister Adelita (Esmeralda Camargo), a markswoman with the freedom fighters known as soldaderas. Adelita joined the soldaderas years earlier after surviving a tragic encounter with the Mexican Federal Army. The reunion proves to be less than joyous, with Luisa and Adelita immediately clashing over the long and bloody struggle that has torn their country apart. El Gato Feo (The Ugly Cat) will screen at 6:30 p.m. June 10 at Austin PBS during the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival's Hecho en Tejas Shorts Competition program. Daniel Fabelo previously worked in the 2010s as an editor, writer, and director at Rooster Teeth. He co-directed Lazer Team 2 and directed episodes of the live-action series Day 5, Immersion, and Haunter as well as an episode of Rooster Teeth's signature animated series Red vs. Blue.
