The latest collaboration between Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum, the lo-fi supernatural comedy The Civil Dead examines the relationship between two men whose friendship has waned since both moved to L.A. And Thomas’ struggling actor Whit now wants to reconnect with Tatum’s unemployed married photographer Clay. Except Whit recently died and walks the earth as a ghost. But Clay, the only person who can see and interact with Whit, quickly grows uncomfortable with Whit always being by his side and his inability to respect boundaries. The Civil Dead screens at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 and 9 at the Alamo South Lamar with Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum in attendance. The Civil Dead, which also screens Feb. 10 and 11 at the Alamo South Lamar and opens Feb. 10 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin, will be available for digital and on-demand viewing on Feb. 17. Friends since attending their middle school days in Alabama, comedian Whitmer Thomas and filmmaker Clay Tatum have collaborated on many shorts dating back to when they were teenagers. They also co-directed Thomas’ 2020 HBO standup special The Golden One. Tatum makes his feature film directorial debut with The Civil Dead. Thomas previously lent his voice to the animated series Stone Quakers, has appeared in episodes of Glow, The Good Place, and Search Party, and will next be seen in the Dakota Johnson coming out romantic comedy Am I OK?
