Interview:
Owen Egerton,
writer/director,
"Mercy Black"
Austin-based writer/director Owen Egerton makes the transition from Rooster Teeth to Blumhouse Productions with his new horror film, Mercy Black. Now streaming on Netflix, Egerton’s Austin-shot film introduces Mercy Black, a malevolent entity that may or may not be more than an urban legend. Mercy Black, or so the story goes, seeks out sad children and offers to take away their pain in return for a perfect offering that will make her flesh and blood. As a young girl, Marina Hess and two friends attempted to bring to life an imaginary friend they named Mercy Black, resulting in one of the girls being brutally stabbed and left for dead. Fifteen years later, Marina (Daniella Pineda of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the TV series The Vampire Diaries, and the upcoming Netflix show Cowboy Bebop) is released from psychiatric care and is sent to live with her sister Alice (Elle LaMont) and preteen nephew Bryce (Miles Emmons). But Marina’s past comes back to haunt her when Bryce begins to believe he is being visited by Mercy Black. The cast also includes The Walking Dead’s Austin Amelio as Alice’s boyfriend Will, and Mustang Island and Rooster Teeth fixture Lee Eddy as the librarian who offers Bryce sage advice. Austin-based author Owen Egerton previously directed the psychological chiller Follow and last year’s Rooster Teeth horror-comedy Blood Fest. He also wrote The Axe Murders of Villisca.
