Interview:
Mike Plante,
director,
"And With Him Came the West"
Directed by Sundance Film Festival senior programmer Mike Plante, the documentary And With Him Came the West chronicles how Wyatt Earp endeavored to transform himself from renown Old West lawman into a mythic figure through the power of cinema. Since 1929’s pre-Code western Law & Order, which found Walter Huston playing a lawman modeled on Earp, such actors as Randolph Scott (Frontier Marshal), Henry Fonda (My Darling Clementine), Joel McCrea (Wichita), Burt Lancaster (Gunfight at the O.K. Corral), James Garner (Hour of the Gun), Harris Yulin (Doc), Kurt Russell (Tombstone), and Kevin Costner (Wyatt Earp) have portrayed Earp by name since 1939. Plante’s documentary examines how Hollywood allows history and mythology to overlap using Earp as a case study. And With Him Came the West will screen 7:30 p.m. July 17 at the Austin Film Society’s AFS Cinema with director Mike Plante in attendance. Mike Plante previously produced the documentaries Scrap Veseel, Be Like an Ant, Giuseppe Makes a Movie, and A Land for War. Mike Plante also serves as the Sundance Film Festival’s senior programmer, short film.
