Interview:
Erica Tremblay,
director, "In the Turn"
Director Erica Tremblay’s documentary In the Turn focuses on Crystal LaBonte, a 10-year-old transgender girl living in Ontario, Canada, who faces daily physical and psychological abuse in and out of school. Barred from playing sports at school due to her gender, Crystal seeks solace in roller derby with the help of the “queer collective” the Vagine Regime. In the Turn juxtaposes Crystal’s trials and tribulations against stories of discrimination that members of the Vagine Regime share with director Erica Tremblay. Fifi Nomenon, a jammer/blocker with the Austin-based Texas Rollergirls allstars team the Texecutioners, is featured in the documentary. Erica Tremblay, who previously directed the documentary Heartland, also skates for the Boston Derby Dames under the name Go-Go Gidget. In the Turn will screen 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Salvage Vanguard Theater during the inaugural OUTsider Festival.
