Iliana Sosa,
director,
"God Save Texas: La Frontera"
The intensely personal documentary God Save Texas: La Frontera finds Austin-based filmmaker Iliana Sosa returning to her native El Paso to examine her relationship to the border city as the child of two Mexican immigrants. As she reflects upon her cultural identity as a fronterista torn between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Sosa explores how El Paso is grappling with immigration and gentrification while still also coming to terms with the 2019 shooting that left 23 dead and 22 injured. The God Save Texas trilogy of documentaries, which comprises of Sosa’s La Frontera, Richard Linklater’s Hometown Prison, and Alex Stapleton’s The Price of Oil, is inspired by the book “God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State” by Lawrence Wright. God Save Texas: La Frontera, which premiered in March on HBO, will screen at 3:30 p.m. May 16 at the AFS Cinema during the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. Iliana Sosa is an assistant professor with University of Texas’ Department of Radio-Television-Film. She previously directed the 2022 documentary What We Leave Behind, a portrait of her grandfather Julián, and the 2013 narrative feature Detained in the Desert. She also co-produced Building the American Dream and co-directed the short An Uncertain Future. Aired: May 15, 2024.
