Interview:
Lulu Wang,
writer/director,
"The Farewell"
When is a lie worth telling? This is the question that Awkwafina’s writer Billi struggles to answer in writer/director Lulu Wang’s semi-autobiographical Chinese-American family dramedy The Farewell. Billi finds it hard to accept her family’s decision to lie to her dying Nai Nai (Chinese for paternal grandmother) about her health. Nai Nai has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, but the family concocts an elaborate lie so she can live out her remaining days in blissful ignorance. When Billi arrives in her native China to visit her grandmother for possibly the last time, she finds herself an active participant in the charade that her family has created to shield Nai Nai from the truth. The Farewell costars Zhao Shuzhen as Nai Nai.. The Farewell opened July 19 in Austin. Chinese-American director Lulu Wang previously directed the drama Posthumous.
