Interview: Gary Fortin,
director, "Road to Austin"
Austin’s music community lost one of its most beloved and influential musicians when Stephen Bruton died May 9, 2009 of complications from throat cancer. The Fort Worth-born musician, songwriter and producer worked with such artists as Hal Ketchum, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, Carly Simon, and Delbert McClinton. His served as Kris Kristofferson's gutarist for almost 40 years, ending with Kristofferson’s 2009 album Closer to the Bone. He died two weeks after completing work on the Crazy Heart soundtrack with his lifelong friend T-Bone Burnett. Written and directed by Bruton’s friend and FORMAX Group collaborator Gary Fortin, the SXSW Film Festival entry Road to Music highlights eight performances from the 2007 concert of the same name held at Auditorium Shores that Bruton oversaw as musical director. Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Malford Milligan, Bob Schneider, and opera singer Kara Johnson rank among the featured acts. Fortin also provides insights into Burton’s life and career while offering a brief history of how Austin became the live music capital of the world. Road to Austin will receive its world premiere at 4:30 p.m. March 13 at the Vimeo Theatre at the Austin Convention Center. Designed to raise aware of the Artist Wellness Program, the upcoming Road to Austin Blu-ray will include all 38 songs performed during the concert.
