"The Blazing World"
Austin-based producer Brinton Bryan could not ask for a better start to 2021. Sony Pictures Classic picked up for distribution Bryan’s fact-based inspirational sports drama 12 Mighty Orphan sand his Drippings Spring-shot adult fairy tale The Blazing World will enjoy its world premiere during this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Marking the directorial debut of Carlson Young, The Blazing World features Scream: The TV Series' Margaret Winter as Margaret, a young woman still haunted by the child drowning of her twin sister. Margaret’s trauma manifests itself in dreams and visions of a parallel universe, one where her twin sister may reside. The reappearance of the mysterious man (Udo Kier) Margaret saw on the day of her twin sister’s death prompts Margaret to undertake a metaphysical quest for closure. The Blazing World, which was filmed in 2020 under quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, costars Dermot Mulroney and Vinessa Shaw as Margaret’s estranged parents. The Blazing World will screen 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31 as part of the Austin Film Society’s 2021 Sundance Film Festival drive-in screenings at Pioneer Farms. The Sundance Film Festival also will hold virtual screenings of The Blazing World on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2. The Lubbock-born Brinton Bryan produced The Blazing World and12 Mighty Orphans through his Greenbelt Films. Directed by the Austin-based Ty Roberts, 12 Mighty Orphansis an adaptation of Jim Dent’s book about the Masonic Home Mighty Mites football team that played for a Texas state championship in 1940. 12 Mighty Orphansstars Robert Duval, Martin Sheen, Luke Wilson, Treat Williams, and The Blazing World’s Carlson Young. Bryan will reunite with Young for her next directorial effort, Femina Nox. Bryan previously co-produced Bruce Willis’ Acts of Violence and Sylvester Stallone’s Backtrace. He also directed the short films Silent Night and Pink Eye as well as Foster the People’s “Sit Next to Me” music video.
