In writer/director Leigh Whannell’s futuristic thriller Upgrade, Logan Marshall-Green’s Grey Trace seeks revenge after a seemingly random crime leaves him partially paralyzed and his wife dead. He undergoes an experimental procedure that allows an implanted computer chip to control his body, turning him into a one-man killing machine. Upgrade premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened June 1 in theaters. Upgrade writer/director Leigh Whannell co-created the Saw and Insidious franchises with James Wan. He also wrote Dead Silence, Cooties, and The Mule. He made his directorial debut with 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3. He also stars in the Insidious franchise as paranormal investigator Specs. Upgrade marks Whannell’s continuing collaboration with Blumhouse, the genre label behind the Insidious franchise as well as Get Out, The Purge, Split, Happy Death Day, Truth or Dare, and Paranormal Activity.
