Interview:
John Hyams,
director,
"All Square"
Having brought the Universal Soldier franchise to a close, director John Hyams takes a take from action thrillers to direct the character study All Square. In this dramedy written by Timothy Brady, House of Cards' Michael Kelly stars as a John, a small-town bookie who starts taking bets on youth league baseball games. What starts off as a simple business endeavor becomes complicated when the former major league pitcher develops a friendship with Brian (Jesse Ray Sheps), the son of a high school ex and a baseball player who has trouble on the mound. John Hyams previously directed One Dog Night, three Jean-Claude Van Claude films (Dragon Eyes, Universal Soldier: Regeneration and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning), the documentary Rank, and episodes of the TV shows Chicago P.D., The Originals, and Z Nation. Hyams is currently putting the finishing touches to his next thriller, Alone. He is the son of director Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, 2010, Outland, Running Scared, TimeCop, End of Days). All Square will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 7 p.m. March 10 at the Zach Theatre, 11:45 a.m. March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 8:45 p.m. March 15 at the Alamo South Lamar.
