"Unfriended: Dark Web"
Unfriended: Dark Web is a standalone sequel to the 2014 Blumhouse "screenlife” chiller that abandons its predecessor’s supernatural elements in favor of a real-world technological and physical threat. Marking the directorial debut of The Grudge, The Grudge 2 and Texas Chainsaw 3D screenwriter Stephen Susco, Unfriended: Dark Web pits a group of online friends against the owner of a stolen laptop who engages in mysterious and illegal activities. The cast is led by Unsane’s Colin Woodell, The Mindy Project’s Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Get Out’s Betty Gabriel. Unfriended: Dark Web premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened July 20 in theaters. Unfriended: Dark Web is produced by Timur Bekmambetov, the director of Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and the 2016 Ben Hur remake. In addition to the Unfriended franchise, Bekmambetov also directed the upcoming “screenlife” drama Profile and the produced the “screenlife” thriller Searching, which opens Aug. 24.
