Interview:
Nacho Vigalondo,
writer/director,
"Colossal"
What happens when you discover you have a psychic connection to a Godzilla-like monster that keeps attacking South Korea? That’s the problem faced by Anne Hathaway’s out-of-work booze hound in Colossal, writer/director Nacho Vigalondo’s dark comedy about self responsibility and toxic masculinity. Dumped by her boyfriend (Dan Stevens), the unemployed Hathaway moves back to her upstate New York hometown to work through her issues. Then she learns she is responsible for the actions of a monster that has not been seen or heard from since she was a kid. The cast includes Jason Sudeikis as the childhood friend who tries to help Hathaway come to terms with her bizarre predicament. One of Fantastic Fest’s favorite sons, Vigalondo previously directed Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial and the Austin-shot Open Windows. Colossal, which closed last year’s Fantastic Fest and played this year’s SXSW Film Festival, is now in theaters. It also represents the first release by NEON, the new film distribution company formed by the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema founder/CEO Tim League with Radius-TWC former co-president Tom Quinn.
