Interview:
Simon Ennis,
director,
"The Hobby"
For Simon Ennis, and thousand like him, playing modern board games isn't a hobby. It is The Hobby. And Ennis' celebratory documentary The Hobby takes the uninitiated inside the modern board gaming community. Ennis meets with gamers, professional and amateur designers, tournament hosts, and museum curators to dissect the appeal of and the joy to be found in playing such games as "Catan," "Blood Rage," "Wingspan," and "Sagrada." He also follows amateur designer John Hague in the months leading up to his crowd-funding campaign for his game, "The Last Summit." The Hobby screens during the SXSW Film & TV festival at 11:15 am March 10 at the AFS Cinema. Simon Ennis previously directed Lunarcy and You Might as Well Live. Posted: March 9, 2024.
