June 2023 Programming
The Austin Film Society kicks off its June 2023 programming at the AFS Cinema with two series, the Wes Anderson-related series Do Not Detonate: The Films Behind Asteroid City (comprised of On the Waterfront, the director's cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Misfits, and a preview of Asteroid City) and The Early Works of Makoto Shinkai (comprised of the anime director's The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and Children Who Chase Lost Voices). L.A.'s Pan African Film Festival brings three selections to the AFS Cinema (Fantastic Negrito: Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, The Africologist: Chronicles of Africa, and The Honeymoon). The AFS Cinema will host a special screening of Emanuelle in America, which will be followed by a panel discussion and a screening of Queer Cinema: Lost & Found programmer Elizabeth Purchell's short documentary The Naked Eye: Sex And The Mondo Film. The Austin Film Society will celebrate Juneteenth with a screening of writer/director Channing Godfrey Peoples' AFS-supported Miss Juneteenth. New releases include Blind Woman, Sleeping Woman, Sanctuary, and Asteroid City) while part-time Austin filmmaker Bastian Günther's drama One of These Days receives a Best of the Fests screening on June 4. Retrospective screenings include 3 Women, The Last of Sheila, Wild Reeds, a James Baldwin package of three shorts, and the Lates selection Sailor Suit and Machine Gun. The Queer Cinema: Lost & Found series brings The Devil Queen to the AFS Cinema. Lead film programmer Lars Nilsen also will host a service on June 4 for Austin-based actor-stuntman-filmmaker Gary Kent, who died May 25 at age 89.
