Interview:
Sam J. Jones,
"Flash Gordon,"
Wizard World Austin Comic Con
![]() Sam J. Jones saved every one of us when he took on Ming the Merciless in director Mike Hodges and producer Dino De Laurentiis’ 1980 version of Flash Gordon. While this adaptation of the Alex Raymond comic strip did not achieve blockbuster status during its U.S. theatrical run, it has since obtained a devoted following because of Jones’ turn as the so-called Savior of the Universe, Max von Sydow’s dastardly interpretation of Ming the Merciless, the film’s campy humor, and Queen’s rousing soundtrack. After Flash Gordon, Jones went on to star in the 1985 comedy My Chauffeur and the TV shows Code Red, 1st and 10: The Championship, The Highwayman, and Hollywood Safari. He also appeared as a highly fictional version of himself in Seth MacFarlane’s Ted and Ted 2. Jones will appear this weekend during the Wizard World Austin Comic Con, which will be held Sept. 23-25 at the Austin Convention Center.
