The Cine Las Americas International Film Festival will screen six shorts at 12 p.m. May 5 at the AFS Cinema as part of its Hecho en Tejas program, which is dedicated to films made by Texas filmmakers. Shorts by Austin filmmakers include co-director Sarah M. Kuck’s documentary The Returned (Retornados), director Artemis Anastasiadou's Calling, and actor/co-producer Humberto Adrián Pérez’s Towards the Sun (Hacia el sol). Calling focuses on a traumatizing event that fractures relationship between a mother and her special needs son; The Returned offers portraits of three Honduran families desperate to flee their country because of gang violence. Directed by Monica Santis, Towards the Sun tells the story of a 12-year-old Mexican girl who fears her past will catch up with her at the Texas immigrant children’s shelter she temporarily calls home.
