"Dreamscape"
The Other Worlds Film Festival will present a 35th anniversary screening of Dreamscape at 7:42 p.m. Dec. 5 with co-writer/director Joseph Ruben, producer and co-writer Chuck Russell, and co-writer David Loughery in attendance. The 1984 sci-fi thriller stars Dennis Quaid as psychic Alex Gardner, who reluctantly joins a secret government research program to escape his mounting gambling debts. Alex’s job is to use his psychic powers to enter and potentially alter a test subject’s dreams and nightmares. Alex slowly comes to the realization that one of the program’s driving forces intends to employ this cutting-edge technology for his own nefarious purposes. Dreamscape co-stars Max von Sydow as Gardner’s mentor and program director Dr. Paul Novotny, Kate Capshaw as scientist Dr. Jane DeVries, Christopher Plummer as government agent Bob Blair, and David Patrick Kelly as rival psychic Tommy Ray Glatman. Dreamscape co-writer/director Joseph Ruben got his start directing teen comedies and dramas for American International Pictures and Crown International Picture, including The Sister-in-Law, The Pom Pom Girls, and Joyrider. He also directed Dennis Quaid in Our Winning Season and Gorp before Dreamscape. Following Dreamscape, Ruben directed The Stepfather, True Believer, Sleeping With the Enemy, The Good Son, Money Train, Return to Paradise, The Forgotten, Penthouse North, and The Ottoman Lieutenant.
