Other Worlds Austin
A film festival with a focus on sci-fi and a fondness for horror, Other Worlds Austin will run Dec. 6-9 at the Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock. Other Worlds Austin opens Dec. 6 with a 30th anniversary screening of Alien Nation with screenwriter and Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon in attendance and closes Dec. 9 with the world premiere of Encounter with director Paul J. Salamoff in attendance. Also receiving their Austin premiere are the documentary Artistic Depiction and the narrative features 2050, Ascension, The Axoim, Cygnus, The Dead Center, Deadtectives, Diminuendo, Elijah and the Rock Creature, The Fare, I’ll Take Your Dead, Precognition, Pulse, Soul to Keep, White Chamber, and The Wrong Todd. There are also will be packages devoted to sci-fi, horror, and documentary short films. Other Worlds Austin also will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the TV series Battlestar Galactica with a screening of the 1978 theatrical film version of the pilot, Saga of a Star World, and its uncredited director Alan J. Levi with the Defender of the Universe Award. A television director who worked on such series as The Six Million Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Buffy, the Vampire Show, Levi also will host a secret screening of an episode of a little-seen series. Director Lizzie Borden also will attend the 35th anniversary screening of 1983’s Born in Flames, which combines alternate history fiction and documentary techniques to explore a United States a decade after a peaceful revolution has turned the country into a socialist democracy. There also will be a panel devoted to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" to celebrate the novel's 200th anniversary.
