Interview:
Vittorio Bongiorno,
writer/director,
"Greetings From Austin"
Directed by Vittorio Bongiorno, the music documentary Greetings from Austin follows the Sicilian rockabilly band the Don Diego Trio as they attempt to take Texas by storm. In 2017, the band arrived in Austin intent on winning Best Rockabilly Group at the Ameripolitan Music Awards, the annual American traditional roots music showcase spearheaded by singer-songwriter Dale Watson. The Don Diego Trio—led by Diego Gerace—spent 10 days in Austin rehearsing, performing, and recording a Texas-flavored album about Austin at Watson’s Ameripolitan Studios. They even managed to perform a studio session for KOOP Radio’s Under the X in Texas. But did they win the award that brought them to the state that inspired them to become the musicians they are? The answer can be found in director Vittorio Bongiorno’s documentary Greetings from Austin, which takes its name from the album the Don Diego Trio recorded here visiting the city in 2017. KOOP presents a screening of Greetings from Austin at 7 p.m. April 11 at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller. The screening, hosted by Under the X in Texas’ Ted Branson, will include a post-screening Q&A with director Vittorio Bongiorno and a live performance by the Don Diego Trio at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller’s Barrel ‘O Fun.
