The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop"
Curated by artist and educator Karen Maness, the “Behind the Scenes: The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop” exhibition at the Bass Concert Hall features 12 of the 50 MGM film backdrops owned by the University of Texas. The historic hand-painted backdrops from the MGM productions The Glass Bottom Boat, National Velvet, The Outrage, The Prodigal, The Student Prince, Tip On a Dead Jockey, Two Loves, Two Weeks in Another Town, and Young Bess are on display to the general public for the first time through March 21 at the Bass Concert Hall. The exhibition also includes partial recreations of other MGM backdrops by Prof. Maness’ UT Austin scenic art students. Timed admission tours of the exhibition are conducted under COVID-19 safety protocols. An on-demand video tour also is available for those unable to attend the tour in person. Karen Maness is the Scenic Art Supervisor at Texas Performing Arts and a member of the Live Design faculty at The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre & Dance. She cowrote the 2016 book “The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop” with Richard Isackes.
