Youth Initiative mentor
The Indie Meme Film Festival runs April 19-22 at the Regal Cinemas Arbor 8 at Great Hills. Devoted to South Asian independent cinema, the festival includes a Youth Initiative screening featuring films made by high school or university students of South Asian descent or about the South Asian community. The program includes the short drama Sari, written and directed by Ana Dragomir (center right) starring Ani Naser (center left). Serving as a Youth Initiative mentor is Austin filmmaker Tania Romero (left), whose new short film Hakla also screens during the Indie Meme Film Festival. The drama stars Prayas Vats (right) as a high school student suffering from a speech disorder who finds joy in salsa dancing. Romero previously directed the documentaries Rasika Mathur: Truth Teller and Even with Their Nails: Women Filmmakers in Nicaragua. The Indie Meme Film Festival Youth Initiative screening will be held 7 p.m. April 19. Halka will screen before the feature film Bhasmasur at 8 p.m. April 19.
