Interview:
Alex Smith, co-director,
"Winter in the Blood"
Directed by twin brothers Alex & Andrew Smith, the Montana-set First Nations drama Winter in the Blood follows a Native American’s efforts to reconcile his troubled past while he searches for his wife, who has run off with one of his treasured personal belongings. Chaske Spencer stars as Virgil First Raise, who often cannot distinguish reality from drunken hallucinations. Winter in the Blood also features supporting performances by David Morse and Dana Wheeler-Nicholson. The Austin Film Society will screen Winter in the Blood at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Marchesa Hall & Theater with Alex Smith in attendance. This adaptation of Native American author James Welch’s 1974 novel marks the first film from Alex & Andrew Smith since 2002’s football drama The Slaughter Rule, which starred Ryan Gosling. In addition to working with his Montana-based brother Andrew, Alex Smith teaches film at the University of Texas at Austin and is the creative director of the non-profit University of Texas Film Institute, where he produced the student-made narrative feature Dance With the One.
