"The Spine of Night"
Written and directed by Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King, the hand-rotoscoped sword and sorcery epic The Spine of Night pits humanity against the malevolent host of a power derived from an ancient plant known as The Bloom. Swamp witch Tzod (voiced by Lucy Lawless) seeks out a centuries-old warrior known as The Guardian (Richard E. Grant) to provide her with the knowledge and the guidance she needs to save the world. The voice cast is led by Richard E. Grant, Lucy Lawless, Patton Oswald, Joe Manganiello, and Betty Gabriel (who also gives a pre-rotoscoped live performance). Philip Gelatt previously directed They Remain and The Bleeding House and wrote Europa Report and six episodes of the David Fincher Netflix animated series Love, Death & Robots. Morgan Galen King wrote and directed the animated short Exordium, which inspired The Spine of Night. The Spine of Night premieres 8 p.m. central March 18 during SXSW Online, which runs through March 20. Aired: March 18, 2021.
