Other Worlds Film Festival
Devoted to sci-fi and sci-fi terror, the virtual Other Worlds Film Festival will run Dec. 1-6. The festival kicks off Dec. 1 with Skylin3s, writer/director Liam O’Donnell’s follow-up to his Skyline sequel Beyond Skyline, which opened the 2017 Other Worlds. The festival continues with the Underworlds Centerpiece alien invasion comedy An Ideal Host on Dec. 2 and the Other Worlds Centerpiece time-travel comedy Paradox Lost on Dec. 5 The festival closes Dec. 6 with the sci-fi drama Tales of Tomorrow (Contos do Amanhã). The much-maligned Judge Dredd receives a 25th anniversary screening on Dec. 3 followed by a Q&A with director Danny Cannon. Other Worlds will honor Riddick franchise director David Twohy on Dec. 5 with a screening of Pitch Black and a Q&A with the writer of Critters 2, Warlock, The Fugitive, and Waterworld. Other Worlds sci-fi selections include Dune Drifter, Entangled, Gone, I Am Ren, Lapsis, Meander, Minor Premise, and The Return. Under Worlds horror selections include Bleed With Me, Breeder, The Oak Room, and Sweet River. Weirder Worlds, a new program dedicated to films that stretch the boundaries of sci-fi, features Creatures, Death of a Rockstar, and Playdurizm. The festival also will screen the documentary Indian Space Dreams. Other Worlds will celebrate of the 30th anniversary of Total Recall with a live reading of the late Dan O’Bannon’s original 1993 screening on Dec. 5. Other virtual events include conversations on the female gaze in horror and production design, Fallout Comedy’s Unnecessary Sequels live gameshow, a Theremin live performance with Carolina Eyck, a sci-fi trivia party, and podcast recordings. Other Worlds also will announce the winner of its Mary Shelley Award, which is devoted to women working in genre filmmaking.
