Other Worlds Film Festival
The sixth annual Other Worlds Film Festival will be held Dec. 5-8 at the Galaxy Highland 10, marking a return of the annual celebration of sci-fi and horror to Austin for the first time since it relocated to Round Rock in 2016. The Other Worlds Film Festival opens Dec. 5 with its launch film, 1984’s Dreamscape, with director Joseph Ruben and co-screenwriters David Loughery and Chuck Russell in attendance for this 35th anniversary screening. The film festival’s opening night film, Enhanced, will screen Dec. 6 and its closing night film, The Honeymoon Phase, will screen Dec. 8. The horror comedy anthology Scare Package, produced by the Austin-based Aaron B. Koontz and featuring segments directed by Koontz, Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, and Noah Segan, will screen Dec. 7 as the festival’s Under Worlds Centerpiece Film. Also receiving their Austin premiere are the documentary I Am Human and the narrative features 1BR, Afterlife, After We Leave, Alien Addiction, Around the Sun, The Ascent, Dead Dicks, The Final Land, A Good Woman is Hard to Find, Lake Michigan Monster, Spiral, Volition, and Z. The film festival will present a 40th anniversary screening of Time After Time on Dec. 6 and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country on Dec. 8 with director Nicholas Meyer in attendance. Meyer, who also directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Day After, Volunteers, The Deceivers and Company Business, will receive the Other Worlds Film Festival’s 2019 Defender of the Universe Award. The Other Worlds Film Festival also will screen director James Whale’s 1932 chiller The Old Dark House, featuring the world premiere of a new score by composer Jay Woelfel, as well as the 1969 British sci-fi thriller Doppelgänger as the festival’s Founder’s Pick. There also will be short film packages, panel discussions, and a live podcast recording of “Science vs Fiction,” hosted by film critic Scott Weinberg and Found Footage 3D director Steven DeGennaro.
