Interview:
Channing Godfrey Peoples,
writer/director,
"Miss Juneteenth"
A story of black motherhood set against the holiday that observes the Emancipation Proclamation,Miss Juneteenth marks the directorial debut of Fort Worth native and Austin Film Society grant recipient Channing Godfrey Peoples. Sleepy Hollow’s Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a former Miss Juneteenth who pushes her teenage daughter Kai to compete in the scholarship pageant in the hopes it will secure Kai a brighter future if she wins. Turquoise, whose Miss Juneteenth victory did not change her life as expected, remains stuck in a job that offers her little possibility and she does not want the same fate for Kai. Kai, though, struggles with her pageant commitments in no small part because of Turquoise’s circumstances. Dallas-born Alexis Chikaeze makes her film debut as Kai. Miss Juneteenth, which was to screen during this year’s SXSW Film Festival, will be available to stream beginning June 19. The Austin Film Society also will present virtual screenings of Miss Juneteenth.
