Interview:
Kirk Johnson,
director,
"Beeps"
What would you do would if a beeping smoke alarm tormented you day and night? Directed by former Austinite Kirk Johnson, the documentary short Beeps finds two new East Hollywood residents (Samuel Smith and Robert Vilalta) wandering around their neighborhood trying to track down a smoke alarm in need of a new battery. This unusual quest for peace and quiet also raises greater questions about what it needs to move into a neighborhood experiencing gentrification. Beeps screens during the SXSW Film & TV Festival as part of the Texas Short Competition at 5:45 p.m. March 8 at the Rollins Theatre at The Long Center and at 11 a.m. March 11 at the Rollins Theatre at The Long Center. Kirk Johnson previously co-directed American Gladiators Documentary for ESPN’s 30 for 30 and served as an executive producer of The Amazing Johnathan Documentary. He regularly stars in short horror comedies directed by Austin-based filmmaker Chris McInroy, including GUTS and We Joined a Cult, and starred in McInroy’s Scare Package segment One Time in the Woods. He appeared as fictional version of himself in Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge. A Rooster Teeth fixture, Johnson starred in Lazer Team and Crunch Time and lent his voice to Camp Camp, Red vs. Blue, and RWBY. Aired: March 6, 2024.
