aGLIFF 2019 Shorts
The All Genders, Lifestyles, and Identities Film Festival (aGLIFF) will screen its Family/Youth Shorts program at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at the Alamo South Lamar. The program features 10 shorts, including Disengagement and I’m G---, which were made under the guidance of instructor Bears Rebecca Fonte during this summer’s AGLIFF and the Austin School of Film’s Queer Youth Media Project. Disengagement examines two same-sex marriages that are on the rocks; I’m G--- follows a high-school student’s attempt to come out to his best friend. Other films include Katy Erin’s Out of It and Sarah Holland’s Egghead & Twinkie. Both comedy shorts feature women dealing with coming out to friends and family. Out of It, by University of Texas graduate Katy Erin, finds a young woman trying to tell her best friend she is gay—except the friend is suffering from the effects of oral sedation and cannot remember anything she is being told. Erin, who appeared in the web series Gal Pals and the Austin-shot comedy People With Issues, recently directed her second short, Bootstrapped. Egghead & Twinkie, by former Austinite Sarah Holland, follows a young woman’s attempt to deal with the reaction by her best male friend and her parents to her coming out. Holland is now preparing a feature film based on Egghead & Twinkie. Bears Rebecca Fonte also has a dark comedy horror short in the festival, Conversion Therapist, which will receive its U.S. premiere at 9:45 p.m. Aug. 22 and 9:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Alamo South Lamar as part of the Late Night & Sexy Shorts program. Conversion Therapist satirizes the dangerous practices performed by the religious organizations to change a gay person’s sexual orientation. In Fonte’s short, a closeted pastor and conversion therapist is kidnapped and held multiple physical and psychological tests to “persuade” him to reveal he is true sexuality. Fonte, a member of the aGLIFF board of directors, is also is the founder of the Other Worlds Film Festival.
