Interview:
Robert Gordon,
co-director,
"Best of Enemies"
In 1968, last-place network ABC shook up the way it covered the Democratic and Republican conventions, and in doing so ushered in a new era of TV political coverage that continues to be practice today by a multitude of talking heads. ABC hired conservative pundit William F. Buckley and his liberal nemesis writer Gore Vidal to engage in nightly debates during the conventions. Directed by Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon, the documentary Best of Enemies recalls how Buckley and Vidal fought onscreen during their televised debates and off-screen in the ensuing years. Best of Enemies will screen 4 p.m. March 21 at the Topfer Theatre at Zach as part of the SXSW Film Festival.
