"Building the American Dream"
Directed by the Austin-based Chelsea Hernandez, the SXSW Film Festival entry Building the American Dream examines the working conditions and financial exploitation of Texas’ undocumented construction workers. Hernandez frames her documentary against the “Texas Miracle”—the state’s current development and construction boom—and examines the state’s unfavorable employment laws for construction workers, undocumented or otherwise. Building the American Dream will screen during this year’s SXSW Film Festival at 11:30 a.m. March 10 at the Zach Theatre, 5:30 p.m. March 12 at the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center, and 6 p.m. March 14 at the AFS Cinema. Chelsea Hernandez previously co-directed the short documentary An Uncertain Future, about undocumented immigrants living in Austin, which screened during last year’s SXSW Film Festival.
