Interview:
Robert Mark Kamen,
screenwriter,
"The Karate Kid"
Not many screenwriters can claim they are responsible for launching three wildly popular film franchises. Robert Mark Kamen can. He wrote the 1984 original The Karate Kid and two of the sequels that followed. Kamen also teamed with Luc Besson to write the Transporter and Taken franchises. Kamen’s partnership with Besson, which dates back to his uncredited work on 1994’s The Professional, has led to The Fifth Element, Kiss of the Dragon, Bandidas, Colombiana, Brick Mansions, and the upcoming Warrior’s Gate, is a martial arts epic that stars Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista. Kamen also wrote Taps, Split Image, 1992’s Gladiator, Lethal Weapon 3, The Power of One, and A Walk in the Clouds. The Austin Film Festival will screen the 1984 original The Karate Kid at 2 p.m. July 11 at the Galaxy Highland Theater with Robert Mark Kamen in attendance. The Austin Film Festival also will hold a Conversation With Robert Mark Kamen at 2 p.m. July 12 at the Harry Ransom Center. Aired: July 9, 2015 Web site: http://www.austinfilmfestival.com/ |
