Interview:
Daniel Laabs,
writer/director,
"Jules of Light and Dark"
Written and directed by former Austinite Daniel Laabs, Jules of Light and Dark focuses on the father-daughter-like bond that develops between the middle-aged Freddy (Sorry to Bother You, The Old Man & the Gun, and The Haunting of Hill House’s Robert Greenstreet) and twentysomething Maya (Tallie Medel) after he pulls her and her girlfriend Jules (Betsy Holt) from a car wreck. The accident forces Maya to evaluate her life and her relationship with Jules as both recover from their injuries, and she finds herself using Freddy as a sounding board. Meeting Maya prompts Freddy to reach out to his estranged adult daughter and confront his own intimacy issues. Jules of Light and Dark marks Daniel Laabs' directorial debut. Jules of Light and Dark will screen 9:45 p.m. Oct. 25, at the Alamo Drafthouse Village and 6 p.m. Oct. 31 at the State Theatre during the Austin Film Festival.
