Interview:
Emily V. Gordon
and Kumail Nanjiani,
"The Big Sick"
The autobiographical The Big Sick recounts how married couple Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Najiani met and fell in love despite their cultural differences and the mysterious illness that left Gordon in a coma at a fragile moment in their relationship. Directed by Michael Showalter, and produced by Judd Apatow, The Big Sick stars Najiani as himself, a Pakistan-American stand-up comedian whose parents are intent on arranging his marriage to a Pakistan Muslim woman. Emily, a grad student , is played by Zoe Kasdan. Emily and Kumail immediately hit it off, but just when their relationship is about to turn serious, Emily discovers Kumail has not told his parents he is dating a white woman for fear of the problems it would cause. Then Emily becomes sick and is placed in a medically induced coma. This forces Kumail to strike up a friendship with her parents (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) as they wait to learn Emily’s fate. Kumail Najiani wrote the script for The Big Sick with his wife Emily V. Gordon, who was diagnosed with adult-onset Still's disease while in a coma. Najiani was the host of Comedy Central’s The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, with Gordon serving as a writer and the executive producer. The Big Sick premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened June 30 in Austin. Aired: June 29, 2017 Web site: http://www.thebigsickmovie.com |
