"Skull Island"
To Skull Island goes an intrepid Powerhouse Animation Studios. Marking the first completed collaboration between the Austin-based animation studio and Legendary Entertainment, the new Netflix series Skull Island serves as a bridge between two films in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise, the 1970s-set Kong: Skull Island and the present-day Godzilla vs. Kong. Set in the 1990s, the eight-episode first season of the anime-influenced series finds the surviving crew members of the Once Upon a Maritime shipwrecked on the uncharted island ruled by King Kong. The survivors immediately find themselves battling giant creatures and carnivorous plants. But their greatest threat appears to lie with a group of mercenaries searching Skull Island for Annie, a feral young woman who enjoys the protection of her loyal companion, a very large canine-like beast known only as Dog. In the meantime, Kong must stare down an enemy of old, the monster squid that capsized Once Upon a Maritime and devoured most of its crew of explorers. Developed and written by Underwater and Love and Monsters screenwriter Brian Duffield, Skull Island’s voice cast is led by Benjamin Bratt as explorer Cap; Nicolas Cantu as Cap’s son Charlie; Darren Barnet as Charlie’s best friend Mike; Mae Whitman as Annie; and Betty Gilpin as Irene, the wealthy botanist in command of the mercenaries out to capture Annie. Skull Island is now streaming on Netflix. For Powerhouse Animation Studios, head of production Jason Williams serves as Skull Island’s supervising producer and director Willis Bulliner as supervising director. Founded by Brad Graeber and Bruce Tinnin, Powerhouse Animation Studios previously animated the Netflix series Castlevania, Seis Manos, Blood of Zeus, and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Having signed a first-look deal in 2021 with Netflix, Powerhouse Animation Studios is currently working on two spinoff series, Castlevania: Nocturne and Masters of the Universe: Revolution, as well as the second season of Blood of Zeus. Powerhouse Animation Studios is also collaborating with Legendary Entertainment on a new Tomb Raider series for Netflix, which is currently in production with Hayley Atwell voicing Lara Croft.
