"Inbetween Girl"
![]() Written and directed by Austin native Mei Makino, the Galveston-set coming-of-age dramedy Inbetween Girl finds an Episcopalian private school student experiencing her sexual awakening while struggling with her parents’ divorce. Played by Emma Galbraith, the demure Angie unexpectedly enters into a sexual relationship with longtime crush Liam. The problem? Liam is dating the most popular girl in school, the Instagram influencer Sheryl. In addition to feeling guilty about sleeping with Liam, Angie begins to doubt herself and question her pursuit of art as a career when she meets the Stanford-bound daughter of her father’s new girlfriend. On top of this, Angie must deal with the casual and overt racism she endures for being the only Chinese-American student at school. Inbetween Girl will premiere at 4 p.m. March 18 during SXSW Online. With interiors shot in Austin and exteriors shot in Galveston, InbetweenGirl represents the directorial debut of Japanese-American filmmaker Mei Makino. The Austin native, who was raised in and recently return to live in Galveston, previously directed the comedy short Evidence for Santa. Aired: March 11, 2021.
